35mm film tests – Manon and Maleika

For all my last shoots I’ve been sharing another blog post with some film outtakes. So in this post you’ll see two more 35mm film tests – with models Maleika and Manon. It’s still taken on quite a basic cheaper film camera my mom used when I was a kid – Pentax MZ50. I did get an upgrade though, so look out for that in my most recent shoots soon!

I met Maleika at work a few years ago, but we only finally did a little shoot in the beginning of this year. It was short, but it was a really lovely day and I’m glad we got around to it. We wandered a bit in Covent Garden and then took a few portraits inside with the light coming in through the window. Definitely in love with more dramatic lighting and shadows lately.

You can see all the digital shots from this shoot in the recent blog post. It’s always really interesting for me to compare digital with film, sometimes I take really similar shots on both to have it.

Some pictures inside definitely turned out too dark and grainy, but it’s still a vibe. I’m okay with film pictures not being perfect. It makes it more special when they turn out just right. It feels like a little miracle.

Manon @ The Squad

The second of the 35mm film tests featured in this post was with Manon from Belgium who was in London for awhile around Christmas time. I really wanted to shoot a little editorial in Winter Wonderland. So we braved the cold and crowds of people to get some shots there. It’s always an experience, super hectic and the model can start to turn red from cold at some point. I do try to shoot as quickly as possible in situations like that and keep the model warm between shots. We were lucky enough to be able to get ready in warm and super cozy huts there.

Digital pictures from my test with Manon @ The Squad are also on my blog. These especially look a lot different on film and digital. I feel like it behaves in a very different way with all those lights and darkness. In retrospect, I really don’t know why I didn’t use flash for all the film pictures I took when it was getting dark. Still fighting with flash I guess, even though I’m so much more open to it now.
